Fuse Benten Temple is one of the three famous Benten Temple in the Kanto district as well as Asakusa and Enoshima. According to the Fuse Benten Engi description, at night of July 7, 807, a red dragon appeared and constructed a island. The shell shaped hill was built in a pond at one night, and that miracle made the hill a religious place.
The Buddhist temple was built as the Kouryusan Tokaiji Temple on March 823 and designated as a imperial invocation temple. The present main temple was built in 1717.
